Bed switcheroo

Ahh, life is back to normal here after 3 years. Let me explain. We never saw ourselves staying in this house with one kid. Then we had two kids and we are still here. Now, it is three years later and we still love living where we do. We know eventually we will need more space and some growing room, but the perks of city living have outweighed our discomfort of being on top of each other.

My tension, however, has been mounting over recent weeks with the desire to have a bedroom with a door. Yes, I'm not asking for much. But in a house this size, apparently, I am asking for much. When Ben was born, we kept Eddie in the same tiny bedroom in the back, put the crib in the real bedroom in the front and moved ourselves to an open area at the top of the steps. All along we had the plan to put Eddie and Ben in a room together and it never happened. It was nice to separate them for naps and rest time. And it was nice not to have to worry about them waking each other up (since this family gets up so early). And it was nice to have them "go to your room" for timeouts. But lately, I really wanted a door.

So, we took the plunge this past weekend. We went to Ikea and bought bunkbeds for the boys. They have loved them, despite Eddie's initial reluctance. I too, wouldn't want my baby brother moving into my room, but he rallied. The bottom mattress lays on the floor, so Ben doesn't have far to drop when he rolls off.

He has managed however to roll off the bed every night. Granted the room is only about 5 feet wide so he doesn't roll far, but he lands on the heater which isn't an issue now, but may be

by winter if he hasn't figured out how to lay still. This is Ben on his way out.

The funniest part is that we built the bed in the tiny room, so there is no way it is coming out without us either painstakingly taking it apart (not likely) or taking a chainsaw to it (more likely). It is much wider than any door in this house. In fact, even funnier, their door now won't close because the bed sticks out too far. We have to see about removing some molding or shaving the door or something.

And on a happy note, we have moved our bed back into the main bedroom, put in the window a/c unit and for the first time in 3 years, I got out of the shower, went into my room and gently closed the door on my children so I could put on my makeup and get dressed alone. Ahh, the little pleasures in life. Happy sanctuary.
