(I mentioned that since I was behind on my blog, I wanted to update you about some things that happened over the summer. Read on.)
Over the summer, Peirce and I had a night away without the kids. We decided to go to Harrisburg, PA. Yes, you wonder why on earth we would pick that random place, but we had been years ago and we knew they had a cool minor league baseball park. So we decided to give it a go. Unfortunately, after booking the hotel room, Peirce discovered that he had his weekends mixed up and the team wasn't in town that weekend after all. Oops. But, that afforded us time to wander around the city.
First, we hiked over the Susquehanna river on the great bridge that connects downtown to the stadium. You can see the stadium in the back of this shot.
And the city on the other side of the bridge in the back of this shot.
We were careful to make sure, as this sign indicated, that the water mark wasn't as high as it was during Hurricane Agnes in 1972.
After we traipsed around the stadium lamenting that there wasn't a game and now what would we do for dinner, but the Orioles are on, so we found a sports pub instead so maybe we would be okay....sorry, I digress. We were just really craving some baseball. Anyway, after all that, we went around the city streets and found a place to eat lunch at one of the many many choices of cute restaurants. Then we made our way to the capital building.
The front of the building had the coolest quotes etched in all the stonework.
Seriously, I wanted to pose with every one of them.
And Peirce accommodated me with my posing.
After all that posing in the hot sun, we went inside in the air conditioning for a bit. The capital dome was so pretty.
After we left there, we found some cool artwork on the side of the sidewalk.
It made me realize how something so simple on the side of a street can be so unique to a city and help give it character.
The next morning, we took a drive around and came to the capital from a different angle on a different street. Peirce declared this the coolest entry ever to drive to a city. It felt like you were in Europe.

Thanks for the pics.It does look like a really neat city.Speaking of Hurricane Agnes, I had come to Richmond with 2 1/2 year old Will and 5 month old Gordon (baby Peirce had not been thought of yet) to go to a wedding. We stayed with my parents and due to the storm had no running water. Had to go to a city meeting place and get it in jugs. This went on for days-not fun with 2 in diapers.
ReplyDeleteDo you have any pics to post of the camping trip?
Crazy story! That is one for the memory books. Have to still get the camping pictures, but hopefully soon I can post that.
DeleteSounds like a very relaxing weekend away. Too bad you did not get to a ball game but at least you got to read some interesting quotes.
